Euro 2008: Who Should Belgium Fans Support?

June 6th, 2008 | By: julien | 2 Comments »

The Euro 2008 has been anticipated for some time now and it is finally almost here. Since the 1960s numerous European national teams have competed. Arguably, this tournament is better to watch than the World Cups since many “minnows” are left behind in qualifying. Each time it has suitably showcased beautiful European football. This 13th edition of the UEFA European Championship is jointly hosted by Austria/Switzerland. Unfortunately, Belgium is going to miss another Euro. They missed the two spots in their qualifying group by a significant margin (9 and 10 points respectively for 2nd and 1st). It was a relatively easy group for the Rode Duivels and yet they failed to produce. They had more defeats than losses and surprisingly Kazakhstan gave the team trouble. It was just bad. Really bad. I still can’t believe the results:
UEFA EURO 2008 Qualifying Group A
Team Pts Pld W D L GF GA GD
Poland 28 14 8 4 2 24 12 +12
Portugal 27 14 7 6 1 24 10 +14
Serbia 24 14 6 6 2 22 11 +11
Finland 24 14 6 6 2 13 7 +6
Belgium 18 14 5 3 6 14 16 -2
Kazakhstan 10 14 2 4 8 11 21 -10
Armenia 9 12* 2 3 7 4 13 -9
Azerbaijan 5 12* 1 2 9 6 28 -22

So Belgium missed a trip to Austria and Switzerland, but who should Belgium fans support? Well first and foremost being a neutral supporter is always a great option. Although matches are not as passionate for neutrals, you are able to really enjoy matches without the bias and nail biting. You just sit back and watch the beautiful game. Another option is supporting your qualifying group’s winners. Usually in sports, you want the team that beat you in a tourney to go all the way and win it all. I would feel content seeing Portugal or Poland win the Euro. It helps justify some of our losses. You could also support one of your other favorite national teams. That sounds good to me unless you are an Oranje and Rode Duivels fan. That just doesn’t work, in my opinion. Another option is taking a quiz to see who you should support:

That test gave me Switzerland, which is odd. I will be supporting my dad’s country, France, as they struggle to win with Domenech pulling the strings. Let’s hope that Belgium will make it to the Euro 2012 Poland/Ukraine.

Not just neighbors. Practically brothers :p. Belgium, Netherlands, and most of northern France all used to be part of Zeventien ProvinciĆ«n awhile ago. In my dad’s native city, Douai (Dowaai in Dutch), we still have separatists that want to be part of Belgium and the Netherlands (Low Countries unity), and want to speak Dutch. My dad jokes that his family and most of northern France are more Belgian than French. Our culture still is pretty Flemish, too.
